Through its members, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) will donate 332,000 liters of 70% alcohol for use during this year’s elections, in partnership with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The input will be turned into sanitizer gel for voters and applied to disinfect surfaces. That amount comes on top of donations by other companies, such as Raizen and Companhia Nacional de Alcool (CNA), in order to meet demand from all electoral zones in the country on November 15 and 29, when the first and second election rounds will be held, respectively.
“The 2020 elections take place in an atypical scenario imposed by COVID-19, where previously unused inputs became essential. Companies in the sugar-energy industry are acting to provide safety to the population, in yet another demonstration of their commitment to the country,” says UNICA Chairman Evandro Gussi.
In the first half of 2020, companies associated with UNICA donated 1 million liters of 70% alcohol to be used in the disinfection of the public healthcare system in nine states, including Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
“Brazil was one of the few countries in the world that did not suffer from a shortage of essential products during the pandemic as agricultural producers and agribusinesses stepped in. Over the past few months, we have continued to offer sugar, ethanol, bioelectricity, and alcohol for asepsis thanks to strict safety and health protocols that have allowed our operations to continue,” adds Gussi.
