UNICA: Now it’s time to think about a post-2020 biofuels policy

UNICA pleased with Environment Committee support for Bioethanol
“UNICA congratulates European Members of the European Parliament for confirming the need to promote biofuels which have the highest environmental credentials, such as bioethanol” said Géraldine Kutas, Head of International Affairs at UNICA. Despite the adoption of a 6% cap for conventional biofuels, the Environment Committee took three important steps to promote sustainable biofuels and contribute to the decarbonisation of transport.

Elizabeth Farina, CEO of the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA), said today that she hopes to have a direct exchange with newly re-elected President Dilma Rousseff, thereby allowing Rousseff to fulfill the commitment she made in her first speech after re-election to be the President of the dialogue, of change and one who will support producing sectors, especially industrial sectors.

The definition of success for Brazil’s sugar-energy industry in coming years is directly connected to identifying the right conditions to bring back investments and expand production. The statement came from the new CEO at the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA), Elizabeth Farina, as she began her first day at the helm of the top organization representing Brazilian ethanol, sugar and bioelectricity producers.
Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association announces new CEO
The Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA), has announced the appointment of University of São Paulo Economics Professor Elizabeth Farina as the organization’s new CEO. She replaces Economist and Agronomist Marcos Jank, who left the position in April, and technical director Antonio de Padua Rodrigues, the acting President since Jank’s departure.

Biofuels in the Renewable Energy Directive – the final call

On 17 May representatives of the European Parliament, member states and the European Commission will meet to negotiate the provisions on biofuels in REDII. This might be the last chance to find a compromise that ensures the future of a technology that is critical to reduce carbon emissions in transport.
